We dig fresh our plants and ship immediately. We ship US Mail, Priority shipping. You will receive a tracking number once your plants ship. All plants will be fine in their packages for up to 3 days after receiving.
We sell only bare root plants. We dip the roots in tera-sorb silicone gel to retain ample moisture for transit and surround with plastic. This is superior protection for plants in transit for up to 12 days.
Open your plants and inspect the same day received. We offer 3 days to report any problems with your order. Bare root plants need to be planted within 2-3 days of receiving unless weather-related problems prohibit planting. Store in a cool place and keep roots moist and covered with plastic until they can be planted. Water for the first week daily after planting.
Description
American Wintergreen, botanically known as Gaultheria procumbens, is a small shrub similar to heather and blueberries, which all belong to the Ericaceae family.
It is also known as Boxberry, Deerberry, Ground berry, and Spiceberry. Native to Canada and the Northeast United States, American Wintergreen bears oval, leathery, mint-scented leaves that, when split and have a strong medicinal fragrance similar to meadowsweet. The American Wintergreen flowers create sweet, tasty bright red berries that are edible. The bright red berries and green-reddish-bronze leaves of the American Wintergreen add a festive appeal to your home garden landscape.
Care and Maintenance
Best planted in the fall, American Wintergreen is good for a partially sunny spot in your garden. It is planted in the spring if you have purchased plants in containers. American Wintergreen thrives best in acidic, well-drained soil and will also thrive in heath soil.
· American Wintergreen requires very little care. Watering this plant regularly during extended dry spells is necessary, especially for container-potted American wintergreen. To balance the shape of your American Wintergreen shrub, do not prune it until the blooming season is over. To create a bed of American Wintergreen, space plants about 40 inches apart in an area that is shaded during the hottest hours of the day. American Wintergreen is a slow-growing plant realizing a few inches a year and spreads by creeping rhizomes. One plant will normally reach over 3 feet in height and width. American Wintergreen requires regular watering. In the case of drought or lack of rain, irrigate your American Wintergreen plants to the equivalent of an inch of rain on a weekly basis.
