The Autumn Blaze, or Acer x freemanii as it is known scientifically, is also called the Freeman Maple.
This maple bears terrific fall foliage making it a lovely focal piece for your home garden sanctuary. The Autumn Blaze Maple is native to North America, a hybrid of the Red and Silver Maple. Bearing dense ascending branches and an oval-shaped crown, the Autumn Blaze Maple matures rapidly, growing 2 feet per year. The Autumn Blaze Maple is a shade tree. Adaptable to a wide range of soil conditions, this tree showcases green leaves throughout the spring and summer. In the fall, it will turn a brilliant orange-red, which gives this tree its name. Since it is a large landscape tree, the Autumn Blaze Maple requires minimal care.
Planting the Autumn Blaze Maple away from buildings is best since they need room to spread their roots. Maintain moist soil around the bases while the tree is establishing and prune every other year, in late spring or early summer. Fertilizing your Autumn Blaze Maple is unnecessary if planted using rich topsoil or organic compost in well-drained heavy clay or sandy soil.
The Autumn Blaze Maple will be one of the tallest in your landscape, thriving best in full sun which helps with its coloring. The Autumn Blaze Maple requires a lot of water to establish; at least five to seven gallons a week to moisten the root zone during the first year of growth. Once established, the Autumn Blaze Maple will be drought resistant and thrive in about 1- to 1/2-inch of weekly rainfall or water. If the leaves turn brown or fall from the tree prematurely, add supplements until the water conditions improve. The Autumn Blaze Maple tree can grow in freezing temperatures, high humidity, and heat levels. Because it is so tolerant, it can be grown in the colder northern and warmer southern regions.
The Autumn Blaze Maple needs extra care before dormancy season. In late fall, prune dead branches and trim back overgrown ones. Place a layer of mulch on tree's base, yet do not place it on the bottom of the trunk. Brown spots or leaf spots are fungal infections that first occur on the lower limbs when the humidity is too high. Leaf spot does not harm the tree or require the use of fungicides. However, insects, including mites, scales, and flathead tree borers, can infiltrate an Autumn Blaze maple. If there is infestation, treat the tree immediately.
The Autumn Blaze Maple will live up to 60 years in the right conditions. They are a fantastic addition to your garden landscape as a shade and ornamental tree.
