Black Haw Viburnum Description

Black Haw Viburnum

Blackhaw viburnum, known botanically as Viburnum prunifolium, is a deciduous shrub that grows as wide as it does tall.

Therefore, it can be trained to grow as a small tree. Blackhaw viburnum shows rough bark in a reddish-brown color and oval, glossy dark green leaves that grow 4 inches long. Clusters of small white flowers emerge in the spring, followed by yellow berries that ripen to a blue-black color in summer. Birds, wildlife, and humans can eat Blackhaw Viburnum berries. Its foliage will turn red and purple in the fall.

Care and Maintenance

Blackhaw Viburnum shrubs grow at a moderate rate. Best planted in the early spring or fall, this is a low-maintenance shrub that grows well in many climates:

  1. Select a spot for your Blackhaw Viburnum shrub with good soil drainage and daily partial or complete sunlight to ensure that the shrub will mature to size.
  2. Give this plant plenty of space in your garden for its roots to establish.
  3. Plant your Blackhaw Viburnum shrub in a spot where it can showcase its lovely flowers, berries, and foliage year-round.

Considerations

Blackhaw Viburnum This is quite hardy and doesn't have severe issues with pests or diseases. Plan to water during dry spells and fertilize your shrub yearly. Pruning must also be done annually to maintain the shrub's size and shape. Blackhaw Viburnum shrubs are famous for their fragrant flowers. These viburnums usually bear four to six flowers during a season. Each flower has five sepals and ten petals that change color from white to yellow throughout the season. You can find Blackhaw Viburnum in many places, yet they grow wild in forests, on the edge of wooded prairies, and wetlands, making them adaptable to various soil conditions.

Blackhaw Viburnum shrubs enjoy being planted near water, so they are a lovely addition to your water garden. In addition, a beautiful variety of wildlife enjoys these shrubs. Birds will make nests in the shrub's branches, and deer will feed on its leaves.

Make Blackhaw Viburnum a lovely addition to your home water garden landscape.
