Blazing Star Plant 4 For $16.98 Description

Blazing Star

Blazing Star, or Liatris as it is known scientifically is also known as Gay Feather, is a genus of flowering plants in the Eupatorieae tribe in the Asteraceae or Aster family.

Native to North America, the Blazing Star is a perennial that must have full sun. The Blazing Star is a prairie plant in the wild, so the more sun they receive, the better they will grow. A hardier plant than fox-glove or delphiniums, Blazing star is a low-maintenance choice for adding height and color to your perennial garden. This plant produces purple or pink fuzzy spikes of flowers on top of grass-like leaves. Blazing Star flower spikes grow between 2 and 5 feet high. These structurally swollen dormant stems or corms will send up shoots and then flowers three months after a spring planting. The largest Blazing Star corms will produce the most impressive flowers.

Care and Maintenance

Sow Blazing Star from seed in the fall or in early spring if you are in a warmer climate. Since this plant requires full sun, pick a spot where it will receive light for 6-8 hours per day. Blazing Star grows from tuberous roots known as corms, so it must be planted in light, well-drained soil. Do not plant your Blazing Star in the shade, or it will not thrive. Blazing Star seeds require 45 days to germinate. The seeds will grow best when exposed to the cold for 2 to 3 months before the warm weather. Plants grown from seed will bloom in their second year of being established. You can also transplant potted nursery Blazing Star Plants in late spring. Plant each one at least 2 to 3 feet apart. The Blazing Star plant spreads slowly, eventually growing 3 to 5 feet wide, so one plant is usually enough for most garden landscapes.

Considerations

Blazing Star plants require more water in their first year of being established. Blazing Star self-sows and spreads through its roots which you can divide every 2 to 3 years if its growth slows and the plant becomes crowded. As a unique and colorful addition to your home garden landscape, plant some Blazing Star today.

Blazing Star is now available at TN Nursery at low prices and fast shipping.
