Azure Bluet or Houstonia caerulea, known botanically, is called Quaker ladies, small treat, star violet, or bluets.
This perennial species is in the family Rubiaceae and is native to eastern Canada, Newfoundland, and the United States. Azure Bluet are found in many habitats such as forests, meadows, and shores of rivers or lakes, making them a good choice for your woodland or water garden sanctuary. This plant's purple-blue-colored flowers mixed with a hint of yellow shows its full beauty in March or April. Azure Bluet grows 4 to 8 inches in height. Its flowers grow 3/4 inches wide on top of a slender stem. The Azure Bluet's colored petals point skyward while the basal leaves and stem leaves point in opposite directions.
The Azure Bluet plant is easy to maintain. This plant grows best in acidic, moist organic, well-drained soil. The Azure Bluet requires full and partial sun to keep its blooms open and fresh looking, so plant it where you have 4 hours of complete sun daily and partial shade in the afternoon. Azure Bluet does not require extra fertilizer. They are also disease, pest, and drought resistant, although they will need water if there is a long dry spell. Azure Bluet grow fast and can be placed in many locations as long as they receive the right amounts of sun and water.
Plant Azure Bluets in your garden as ground cover under taller spring-blooming flowers, especially if you have a bare patch of landscape. Once in bloom, your Azure Bluets will appear as a blue carpet when its mass of flowers bloom. In addition, Azure Bluets are perfect for lining garden pathways or planting with other perennial wildflowers. To move clumps of Azure Bluets once they are grown, dig them, and replant them on a cloudy day. Moving them in cloudy conditions will keep the roots moist.
Azure Bluet is a fantastic choice as a lovely addition to your backyard garden sanctuary. They will add color and texture to your garden and be a beautiful sight to behold each spring when they bloom.
