The plants are members of the Rubiaceae family, and they are creeping perennials that yield tiny wildflowers. Bluets spread and form mounds that include delicate leaves and blooms that are pale in color. These flowers are native to the eastern region of the U.S. and grow from Maine to Florida. You can also find them in states like Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Texas.
The flowers on bluets bloom singly on stalks around two and a half inches. You'll see the plant flower near the end of spring. The flowers are baby blue, have yellow centers, and continue to bloom throughout summer and autumn. Bluets are reasonably easy to maintain, making them an excellent choice for the novice gardener.
Bluet flowers self-seed very well. Once you see a whole stand of the blooms, you'll likely see more flowers growing to form a ground cover as the year progresses.
Birds and wind disperse bluet seeds, so it's possible to find these pretty flowers blooming in other parts of your landscape as well. Bluets do well in hardiness zones 3-9 and must be watered often. It's best to plant them near giant trees in the yard or near moss so the bluets can flourish. Bluets do very well near other perennial shrubs and flowers since they add a hue and texture contrast that will make you want to spend more time in your yard or garden. These plants prefer organic, slightly acidic, moist soil. It's best to plant these flowers in the bare areas of your residential or commercial landscape to add color and visual appeal. Keep the flowers out of the warm sun of the afternoon to prevent wilting.
