Broomsedge

Broomsedge or Andropogon virginicus, as it is known scientifically, is also called poverty grass.

As a perennial plant, Broomsedge is known by several names, including whiskey grass, yellow sedge bluestem, and broomsedge bluestem. Belonging to the Poaceae or grass family, Broomsedge is used mostly as an ornamental plant. This is a low-maintenance plant that requires small amounts of water to bloom. Broomsedge is used often in is on golf courses and for residential landscapes, adding life to winter landscapes since it is reddish-orange in color. Broomsedge is freshest during spring and early summer. By late summer into early autumn, it becomes dry and forms thick standing clumps that stand strong for the entire season. Brooms edge usually blooms between September and November. It is native to the southeast United States. The efficiency of its root system allows it to grow back immediately if it gets burned. 

Care and Maintnance

While the Broomsedge is essential food or wildlife and some livestock like cattle. When planted in a home garden, the strong stalks can be used for fall decorations. Broomsedge also provides cover for small wildlife and nesting sites for wild turkeys and quills. This plant attracts butterflies, birds, and bees, due to the seeds that are spread evenly along its stem, which showcase tiny hairs that glow in the sun. Young Broomsedge is usually a greenish-blue color. As the plant matures, it turns a dry golden brown. Broomsedge grows 2-3ft tall and 6-8 inches wide per annually. Full sun and wet to moist soil are necessary to make the Broomsedge bloom perfectly. The Broomsedge can be used in making brooms. This plant reproduces through seed, spreads aggressively in favorable conditions, and survives in barren lands where many other plants cannot grow. Broomsedge has a shallow root which is easily pulled out by hand.

We dig fresh our plants and ship immediately. We ship US Mail, Priority shipping. You will receive a tracking number once your plants ship. All plants will be fine in their packages for up to 3 days after receiving.

How We Protect Your Plants For Transit

We sell only bare root plants. We dip the roots in tera-sorb silicone gel to retain ample moisture for transit and surround with plastic. This is superior protection for plants in transit for up to 12 days.

Upon Receipt Of Your Plants

Open your plants and inspect the same day received. We offer 3 days to report any problems with your order. Bare root plants need to be planted within 2-3 days of receiving unless weather-related problems prohibit planting. Store in a cool place and keep roots moist and covered with plastic until they can be planted. Water for the first week daily after planting.
