Description

Bushy Bluestem grows in mass along pond edges, shorelines, and wet areas

Bushy bluestem (Andropogon virginicus) is a large grass native to the eastern United States; It grows in mass along pond edges, shorelines, and wet areas. Some essential facts about this grass are a wetland plant and herbaceous perennial. When it matures, it will produce fruits known as achenes. The flowers of this plant are small with five petals and look yellow when they bloom in the late spring and summer (New England Wild Flower Society 2010).

It is a large grass found in eastern North America.

Bushy bluestem blooms in early summer, typically with little or no foliage present. The lower stems are thrashed and used for the natural weaving of baskets and wicker furniture.

An 8-9" perennial grass with slender rhizomes gives rise to a tuft of long narrow leaves. The narrow, stiffly erect, and pointed culms reach 3 feet or greater. Like other bluestems, its narrow rachis bears a few spikelets. The inflorescence may be terminal or form a loose panicle that extends well above the leaves.

A tall, rough-stemmed, perennial grass that grows in wet areas such as edges of ponds and ditches is a typical Sedge Family member. The inflorescence is 4 feet tall, supported by a thick, sturdy stem growing from a vast clump of smooth-edged, unequal leaves. The plant turns brown and disintegrates in autumn.

Green grass with purple flowers grows 3 to 8 feet tall.
