Description

Butterfly Plants include the milkweed plant

Do you have a garden? If so, you may want to consider adding milkweed to your list of plants. Milkweed is a beneficial plant for both wildlife and your garden. It is the only plant on which monarch butterflies will lay their eggs, and the larvae (caterpillars) will eat nothing else. Milkweed also attracts other types of butterflies and bees, and hummingbirds.

1) Habitat for some species of wildlife:

In the spring, monarch butterflies make their way to milkweed plants in North America to lay their eggs. The larvae then eat nothing but milkweed leaves and will only survive to become butterflies if they consume enough milkweed. Even if they don't consume enough, the larvae will die off when they can no longer find any milkweed. Once hatched, the caterpillars will seek out new places to lay their eggs the following year. This explains why fmonarchs will fight over this plant.

2) Can be used in the garden:

The leaves of some milkweed species are also edible and can be used in salads or smoothies. In addition to being used as food, the flowers and seeds of many types of milkweeds can also be dried and added to your bird feeders.

3) Benefits the environment:

Caterpillars that eat nothing but milkweed leaves can help balance the populations of insects throughout a region and provide food for birds, bats, and other wildlife.

4) Helps you attract wildlife:

If you like to attract wildlife to your garden, one way to do that is to plant lots of types of plants, including milkweed. Milkweed can be used in the garden and will add beauty and a benefit for some species of wildlife that live in your area.

5) Natural pesticide controller:

Milkweed has been used as a natural pest controller to keep insects down. Since monarch butterflies avoid milkweed, it can be an effective tool for controlling caterpillars, especially since some of the caterpillars will not survive if they lay their eggs on milkweed. Milkweed can also help control aphids and leafhoppers.
