Carex Appalachian Description

Carex Appalachian

The Carex Appalachian is a lovely sedge native to the dry woodlands of eastern North America.

With a fine wild thread-like texture and fountaining blooms, the Carex Appalachian makes a tidy terrific-looking ground cover in drier shady spots in your garden, around root zones of trees, in containers, or as a walkway border planting. Carex Appalachia is best planted in well-drained soil in full or partial shade. Adaptable to a wide variety of soil types, Carex Appalachian does not tolerate wetness. It grows naturally wild in the Appalachian Mountains, from South Carolina to Canada, and can have 12”-18” blades that cascade to about 6”. Carex Appalachian is a great substitute for the ever-popular CarexPensylvanica. The Carex Appalachian has a rougher texture, forms clumps, and can tolerate drier conditions, unlike the Carex Pensylvanica. Carex Appalachia is very deer resistant. Trimmed back to the ground trim in late winter, it will re-flush in a vibrant green in the spring. <h2><span><span>

Carex appalachian care and maintenance

Carex Appalachian is a weeping perennial sedge since it grows in dense mounded tufts. The slender thread-like foliage seems to capture light and wind movement. The Carex Appalachian is indigenous to dry or mesic deciduous or evergreen-deciduous forests. In the wild, this sedge can grow under hemlocks or in high dry spots, including beech, maple, and oak tree forests. Hence the Carex Appalachian can thrive in moisture-challenged shade gardens.

Considerations

As an ornamental plant in gardens, Carex Appalachians are used in wildland habitat restoration, sustainable or natural landscaping, and as grass replacements for lawns and garden meadows that are drought tolerant. Propagation of the Carex Appalachian is by seed and occurs in the spring and blooms from April through August. Carex Appalachian provides shelter and food for ground birds and small mammals and is also a pollination site for butterflies, bees, butterflies, and other insects. The Carex Appalachian will bring beauty, butterflies, and bird watching to your garden hideaway.
