Description
Crabapples are among the most popular choices among homeowners, particularly those who want a low-maintenance, smaller ornamental tree. They bloom in spring, with various blooms, depending on the cultivar. Some crabapple trees reach heights of 50 feet or more.
The diverse range of crabapple trees is one reason for their popularity. The spring flowers bloom in various colors, both pretty and long-lasting. Many cultivars are popular native species that grow quite well.
The tiny white flowers of crabapple trees appear in spring, often remaining for weeks longer than other flowering trees. These trees are warm-weather loving and grow best in full sun or part shade. If a tree gets too much shade, it may be spindly, so place them carefully using good judgment on how they will mature.
They make great focal points when planted by fountains, ponds, and other water features. They are a beautiful alternative to flowering cherry trees, producing white or pink flowers in spring and red to yellow fruit for fall color—plant crabapple trees in full sun and where other nearby trees will not shade them excessively.
Crabapples are excellent choices for attracting wildlife. They offer eye-catching flowers and delicious fruits that you'll enjoy.
These trees are native to woodland areas in the United States and are members of the Rose family (Rosaceae). They are often planted for their flowers, both for their ornamental value and their fruits' food value.
