Goldenseal 5 For $14.99 Description

Goldenseal

Goldenseal or Hydrastis Canadensis, as it is known botanically, is also called orangeroot or yellow puccoon.

Goldenseal is a perennial herb and a member of the buttercup family Ranunculaceae. Native to North America, Goldenseal is distinguished by its thick, yellow-knotted roots. The Goldenseal stem is hairy and purple, growing above ground where it connects to its yellow rhizome. Goldenseal reproduces through rhizome and clonal division, although it takes between 4 and 5 years for a plant to produce flowers.

In the wild, Goldenseal is found in shady deciduous forestlands and is used for medicinal purposes. Goldenseal is an endangered species, so taking the plant from the wild is illegal in many states. Growing Goldenseal plants in your garden can be a lovely addition to your woodland-style landscape. You can purchase your Goldenseal plants from starts.

Care and Maintenance

Goldenseal thrives best in rich, well-drained soil, with some compost or other organic material if your soil doesn’t drain, since Goldenseal does not grow when overwatered. An ideal location for planting Goldenseal is one that is similar to the plant’s natural environment, such as a shady place under a hardwood tree.

Plant your Goldenseal rhizomes with 6 to 12 inches between each rhizome, watering as needed until the plant is established. Goldenseal is drought tolerant yet benefits from weekly irrigation during dry or hot warm weather. Don’t water your Goldenseal plants in the winter unless the weather is abnormally dry.  Goldenseal plant care requires weed control until established. Cover the planted area with thick mulch in the fall, then remove all of the mulch except for 1 or 2 inches in spring.

Considerations

Native Americans have used Goldenseal to treat fevers, ulcers, and skin disorders. Today this plant’s herb is used to treat colds, nasal congestion, and respiratory ailments in combination with Echinacea. Goldenseal can also relieve stomach troubles. As an eyewash, Goldenseal helps eye infections, and as a mouthwash, it reduces inflammation and swelling in painful gums.  Goldenseal leaves are best harvested in the fall after the plant goes dormant.

Goldenseal plants are now for sale at TN Nursery at low prices with fast shipping.

My grandmother used goldenseal when I was growing up, and it helped many of her ailments. I'm very pleased with the plant that I purchased. I hope to learn more about the benefits of it.
