Description
This beautiful plant can grow up to 40-feet tall when it has a structure to climb on. It uses suckers produced by underground runners to attach to almost any surface. A single vine can spread to be more than 10-feet wide.
This plant puts beautiful shiny leaves, dark green on top, and dull green underneath. Each leaf that can be up to 15-inches long produces seven to ten leaflets with serrated edges. The leaves turn yellow in the autumn.
The scarlet or orange flowers have a trumpet shape, and they can be up to 3-inches long. Blooms typically appear in the early summer and last until fall. If this plant does not get enough sun, it will still thrive, not produce flowers.
After the flowers fade, the trumpet vine produces bean-like seed pods up to 5-inches long. If left on the plant, these seedpods will eventually split open, releasing the seeds inside. If they land in the right spot, you can have another trumpet vine.
If left without a structure to climb, the trumpet vine will use its suckers to spread across the ground. Using this vine as a groundcover can be very useful to stop erosion. When left to crawl across the ground, the trumpet vine can also be very useful in camouflaging unsightly debris, such as a rock pile.
You will love the trumpet vine’s many uses.
