The Kousa dogwood is an attractive, small- to a medium-sized tree reaching up to 30 feet at maturity and sometimes referred to as the Chinese dogwood.
It is a graceful tree that projects an air of delicacy. The tree displays a slow growth rate. The Kousa dogwood is often shorter than other Cornus species; This tree displays striking alternate leaves with heart-shaped bases and long stems. The bark on the young plant is smooth but becomes rough and fissured as the plant matures.
It is also known as the Chinese dogwood and can be used as a specimen tree or combined with other trees and shrubs as a border. The colorful fruit that develops after flowering attracts songbirds to your yard. The red fall color makes this southern dogwood a welcome addition to homes in areas that experience mild winters.
Like other dogwoods (Cornus), kousa dogwood (Cornus kousa) is a deciduous shrub native to Asia. This tree bears small white or pale pink flowers in late spring with red and yellow stamens. The flowers give way to green or yellow fruits. These trees grow best in partial shade but can tolerate full sun. This tree does best in well-drained, slightly acidic soil and is sheltered from strong winds and harsh winter weather. Kousas have few significant pests or diseases but may be susceptible to disease issues, such as powdery mildew and leaf spot. Native to China, with a spread of 15 feet. The leaves are dark green, ovate, and measure 2 to 4 inches long. Its white flowers bloom in late March or early April and produce blue-black fruit, an important food source for birds. This small tree works well as a yard specimen or background plant, contrasting more giant deciduous trees.
