Lady Fern 3 For $12.99 Description

The Lady Fern

Lady Fern, known scientifically as Athyrium filix-Femina, is native to damp woodlands throughout North America.

Prized for its delicate, ethereal foliage and low-maintenance properties, Lady Fern thrives in moist shady conditions. It is showcased in both formal and informal gardens and is a remarkably resilient plant that dresses up any landscape. In optimal conditions, Lady Fern can be propagated from spores called indusial and sori that grow on the back of the fern’s leaves.

Lady fern care and maintenance

Starting ferns from spores can be a time-consuming process, so it is best to start your Lady Fern plants from a division of the rhizomes or by purchasing small plants. Divide lady ferns in the spring and water regularly until they are established. You can also fertilize with care since Lady Ferns can’t thrive if over-fertilized.

The Lady Fern bears bright green graceful fronds. When planted in the right location, Lady Fern naturalizes and provides years of beauty with very little maintenance. Lady Fern needs to be planted in loamy, porous, well-drained soil full of nutritious organic matter; however, if overwatered, Lady Fern can plant develop root rot. Lady Fern enjoys humidity and can be planted as a specimen plant or in groupings.

Amending soils with organic compost such as poultry grit is recommended prior to planting. Poultry grit will also help keep the soil from becoming too moist like most fern plants, Lady Ferns like slightly acidic soil.

Considerations

While Lady Fern can survive in dry, sunny climates, they really thrive in moist conditions. Lady Fern will droop if not given the right amount of water. Misting the fronds helps to keep them green and lush. Lady Fern does not brown in the sun like other ferns. It also looks great in garden containers, as ground cover, and along fences or as a border.

Lady Fern is an excellent choice for creative gardeners who like a whimsical woodland ambiance in their garden.
