The Glade Fern is a fern native to western North America. It prefers moist, shady areas with rich soil or rocky crevices that will cling for years. The Narrow Leaf Glade Fern has many uses due to its unique structure and texture, and it can be used as a ground cover, an attractive patio cover, or an accent to flowering plants.
The Narrow Leaf Glade Fern grows 40–60 cm high with light green fronds that may be up to 90 centimeters long and 10 centimeters wide at the base. The fronds are deeply cut to resemble tree fronds. Each stem branch may grow several pinnatifid (deeply cut) fronds. The branchlets are sometimes decurrent, running down the stem-like wings.
The Narrow Leaf Glade Fern produces spores in December and January but may do so throughout the year. It is a very easy fern to grow and adapt to almost any environment. It should be watered only once a month if grown in shade/part sun or part shade/shade. It should be watered once every two weeks from spring until mid-autumn if grown in full sun. If planted in full shade, it should be watered once a month.
It is easily grown in well-drained soil under trees or shaded against walls. The plant tolerates heavy shade but will grow faster in areas with medium to high light intensity. It prefers moist, organic soils that are adaptable to most soil types. This fern is easy to transplant and tends to form clusters quickly. It does spread but not aggressively, so it can be controlled by cutting back the stems.
This fern works well as a ground cover or is planted between stepping stones. It also makes attractive topiaries and ornamental accents for flower beds. This fern can be used indoors in pots under full light conditions because of its relative ease of care. The Narrow Leaf Glade Fern is ideal for a woodland garden, rock garden, or container.
