The Pink Crape Myrtle is one of nearly 50 varieties of the Crape Myrtle family. It is commonly called a Pink Velour Crape. The plant came from Asia, Australia, and India but is now prevalent in North and South America and Europe. This beautiful tree grows to a mature height of 10 to 20 feet tall and about six to eight feet wide, making it an excellent choice for any garden, front yard, or park. These trees are often chosen for beautiful wildlife areas for their vibrant pink flowers from early summer into the fall. In the early summer months, dense pink clusters of flowers bloom on the ends of the long, green branches. The leaves are generally broad and dark green, contrasting with the beautiful pink. In the winter, fruits formed in the fall add a touch of brown and gray color to the tree's dark stems and yellow leaves, giving it a mysterious quality and making it a commonly used landscape item. The trees are easy to shape into any design and handle pruning exceptionally well compared to other trees used in North American landscape palettes.
This species loves rocky, loose, or clay-type soil, being a very hardy and versatile plant. It typically grows in hardiness zones six through ten. One of the best features of this variety is that it grows in semi-arid conditions and holds up to low water conditions. The pink variety proliferates and enjoys full sun for the best growth. As it grows outward, it takes on a half-circle appearance. Many insects and birds are attracted to the Crape Myrtle species because it holds color for the entire year. It gives landscapes a constant cover for squirrels, various butterflies, and many birds. Property owners like this plant because it is a low-maintenance plant that takes care of itself for the most part.
