Red Weigela Description

Red Weigela

The Red Weigela shrub, also known botanically as Weigela florida — is a flowering shrub that will bring a burst of beautiful red coloring to your home garden.

These shrubs bear green leaves that unfurl burgundy or variegated and flower again from summer to fall. Weigela is one of those shrubs that, in the spring, burst into bloom with gorgeous tubular-shaped flowers in various shades of red. The Red Weigela grows upright and is a member of the honeysuckle family. Thriving best in full sun or shade, this shrub does not thrive in hotter regions unless planted in partial shade. While Red Weigela is highly tolerant of heat, this shrub requires consistent watering to make it grow at its best.

Care and Maintenance

Red Weigela is best planted in moist, well-drained soil with plenty of compost or composted manure to enrich the soil and improve drainage. Red Weigela adapts reasonably well to any soil, yet these are its best-growing conditions.

The Red Weigela will grow moderately, gaining 18” a year in new growth. This hardy shrub will grow as wide as it is tall, so consider the appropriate spacing a must when planting several shrubs at once. Once newly planted, water is essential until the plant is established, after which you won’t have to water it unless there is a dry season. Fertilize your Red Weigela once a year in early spring with a slow-release fertilizer specific to shrubs and trees. Prune your Red Weigela in late winter and after plants leaf out in spring.

Considerations

Mature Red Weigela shrubs require the removal of just a few of the oldest and largest stems in late winter. This will propagate a heavier spring bloom, with the shrub producing new shoots that continue to flower in future years. Hummingbirds and butterflies will flock to your Red Weigela, so plant them where you can spend time enjoying them. Your Red Weigela will be the highlight of your home garden sanctuary for many years to come.
