Sensitive Fern 3 For $11.99 Description

Sensitive Fern

The Sensitive Fern, or Onoclea sensibilis as it is known botanically, is a large fern found in North America, parts of Europe, and Asia.

Other names for the Sensitive Fern include bead fern and meadow brake. With its large, easily identifiable light green fronds, Sensitive Fern can't be mistaken for any other fern. The name Sensitive Fern' also refers to the fact that it can be affected by the first frosts. Sensitive Ferns are easy to grow. This plant is suitable for filling spaces and giving your home garden landscape a lush, woodland feel.

Care and Maintenance

Sensitive Fern favors moist, boggy conditions, making it an excellent choice for your water or rain garden landscape. This plant is best grown in rich, organic, medium moisture, well-drained soil and needs consistent moisture to thrive. Sensitive Fern also prefers dappled shade yet will thrive in even full sun if water is present. This plant's underground rhizomes form dense mats, allowing the Sensitive Fern to grow up to two feet tall. Let this plant develop a large colony and even contribute to erosion control with their intertwining roots by planting them near your garden pond or stream bank.

To plant, divide the Sensitive Fern rhizome clumps into hand size pieces and plant them about 18 inches apart in prepared soil no more than a few inches deep. These ferns prefer a shallow soil depth and moist conditions, yet they will not thrive in standing water.

Considerations

The Sensitive Fern's light green fronds reveal infertile leaves in early spring. Fertile leaves emerge in late summer, appearing like stalks with berry-like growths among the leaves, and eventually turn into spores for new plants. Sensitive Ferns get aggressive if left untended and allowed to spread. In addition, its foliage may dry out in hot climates, mainly if the soil is not kept moist.

A Sensitive Fern may be the ideal plant for a damp corner of your garden that needs some green appeal with eye-catching color all year. Buy a Sensitive Fern for your garden today!
