Bloom Season: Smooth Cordgrass is a perennial plant. It typically "blooms" during the autumn months, producing many seeds.
Bloom Color: As a grass, Smooth Cordgrass doesn't produce flowers. Instead, keep an eye out for light yellow or white seed pods that sprout at the ends of the blades.
Height at Maturity: While this plant can reach heights of up to seven feet (2.13 meters), on average, it grows between four and six feet (1.2 to 1.8 meters).
Soil Type Preferred: Smooth Cordgrass is wetland grass, so it prefers wet soil. Cordgrass is often submerged in its natural habitat for prolonged periods, so make sure that it gets plenty of water! The preferred soil types include rich, average, loam, clay, and sand.
Sun or Shade: As a native plant, Smooth Cordgrass is a relatively hardy plant. It grows best with plenty of sunshine, although it can handle small amounts of shade or overhang. As a rule, this grass thrives in direct sunlight, where it can get plenty of warmth to offset the moist soil.
It is a tall, feathery plant often found in saltwater marshes. Smooth Cordgrass prefers soil that is consistently moist and thrives when partially submerged.
Smooth Cordgrass can grow up to seven feet in height, with short, slightly spongy stems and long, tapered leaves that tend to coil or roll inwards at their ends. During the fall, the plant flowers produce spiked seed heads. These seed heads contain a large number of wind-pollinated seeds. Smooth Cordgrass is considered a highly invasive species.
