Description

Softrush Grass hardiness zones are 3-9

It is native to the United States' eastern coast but is not limited to just that region. It is widespread to many cultures worldwide that use its stems for weaving baskets and mats. Other popular growth areas are in the southern provinces of Canada and Southern Alaska.

The bloom season runs from March to September, with the flowers blooming during July's summer months. The flowers are typically yellowish-green to a pale brown. They form as a one-sided cluster, often referred to as cyme. It is a perennial and is an actual grass with a cylindrical stem; It can be mistaken as a weed due to the progressiveness of its growth. It is a beneficial grass that aids in ground erosion.

The height of the Soft Rush Grass at maturity is 4 feet tall

It reaches its peak of maturity, usually a year after being planted the following spring. It breaks forth out of a stout branching rootstock. 6 to 10-inch rhizomes grow approximately 2 inches beneath the soil surface. It forms in clumps of grass and slowly spreads as the wind pollinates its many seeds.

It enjoys fine-textured soils with a pH of 4.0 to 6.0. You often find it in a sub-tropical type climate because it thrives off moisture; It can sustain itself in shallow water less than 6 inches deep. It inhabits marshes, swamps, ditches, wetlands, and meadows.

Soft Rush Grass flourishes off direct sunlight and moisture. It is tolerant of many different site conditions. That is why you can predominantly find grass in North America, Europe, Asia, and many other countries worldwide.

The landscape uses of Soft Rush Grass have been invaluable for wetland restoration and erosion control. It is low maintenance and pest resistant.
