Description
If planted around ponds and lakes, it will grow effortlessly. The Soft Stem Bulrush is an aquatic plant. This plant provides an excellent food source for birds, creating an excellent cover for fish and smaller animals to hide behind. It can also act as a natural solution to erosion. The Soft Stem Bulrush can handle periodic draining and flooding, but it is not suggested for long periods. This plant flourishes in water. Bulrush is commonly found in wet meadows and marshes and along the shores of both fresh and brackish waters. The Soft Stem Bulrush will love full sunlight and partially shaded areas.
The stem is three to six feet tall, cylindrical, and bluish-green. It has a bract at the top of the stem that the spikelets grow out of. The stem crushes between fingers easily because of the air pockets within them. The pockets make the stems soft, giving them the name "Soft Stem Bulrush." The Soft Stem Bulrush has drooping spikelets with several flowers per spikelet. Spikelets are up to a half-inch long at the top of the stem, and the flowers are covered in reddish-brown scales. The Softstem Bulrush does best in full sunlight and partially shaded areas. It will take no maintenance to get established. The sturdy stems are soft and durable - perfect for creating a beautiful, natural-looking water garden. A succulent ground cover is an ideal choice to create a soft feeling between the stones of a dry creek bed where water pools. This plant is sure to look fabulous around your pond or wherever you choose to put it in your landscaping. The Soft-stem Bulrush grows quickly and easily with little maintenance and is beginner-friendly.
