Square Stem Bulrush is a tall plant that grows to heights of between one and six feet in an erect manner

This member of the Bulrush family is known for its love of water and moist parts of North America, particularly the shores of various lakes, beaches, and rivers. Although the Square Stem Bulrush loves the moist areas around the shores of bodies of water, it has been known to survive in standing water as deep as three feet in depth.

Square Stem Bulrush, because of its location and deep water bodies, there is rarely a tree canopy to provide shade, meaning the Square Stem Bulrush has become accustomed to bright light and full sun

The Square Stem Bulrush grows with single stems climbing from a single base with between one and five stems ascending from each. Abloom begins to a breakthrough in late Spring and appears throughout the Summer. That is almost insignificant and takes four to eight bristles that can be seen at the top of each stem. The foliage of this Bulrush species is negligible.

It tends to grow at the stem base in the form of two-six leaves at the stem base. The deep green primary leaf is perennial and does not provide any Fall interest. A fruit grows each Summer on the Square Stem Bulrush that is small and comes in shades of purple, orange, and brown before maturing to a deep brown color.
