Description

 Terrarium Moss -

SphagnumTerrarium moss, also called peat moss or sphagnum moss, is combined with perlite and soil to create water retaining growing medium. This medium is responsible for the health of each member of the terrarium's ecosystem. In nature, terrarium moss grows in northern climates. This plant has no USDA hardiness zone since it is often grown in the wild and harvested.

However, moss prefers cooler climates, boggy areas, and a lot of moisture. When sphagnum moss is harvested, it can take it off the surface of bogs, where it creates large, thick mats capable of supporting a great deal of weight without sinking. The mats are large sponges formed from the moss' capillary roots and small leaves. Considering how well the moss retains water, providing and recirculating water throughout a terrarium's closed space makes sense. In addition, terrarium moss raises the soil's acidity. That is beneficial for several plants.

When planning a terrarium, choose plants that benefit from high acidities, like African violets and orchids. These plants benefit from terrarium moss as a growing medium or soil additive, even in a terrarium. The moss used in terrariums is no longer living. It releases moisture and acidity during its decomposition process. To care for living moss, a grower places sphagnum moss clippings in a flat box and maintains high moisture levels. Most growers cultivate terrarium moss as a medium for other plants, but it has greenery and landscape merit in ponds and damp areas. Industrial sphagnum growers expect to cultivate a significant harvest within eight years of planting. Those not planting for an industrial crop see harvests in a shorter time.

Terrarium moss is commonly grown and harvested from the wet and woodsy outdoors

It does not have a hardy plant zone because of its wild nature. Moss is a bryophyte which means it is a non-vascular land plant. It does not have vessels to support water transport or a root system like a typical plant. It grows like a thick, green, plush mat and is excellent for terrarium use. It is mainly grown in northern climates.

Moss does not flower or produce seeds. They reproduce themselves through pores. A rhizoid produces filamentous outgrowth on the bottom side that looks like fine hair. This root hair anchors the plant and allows it to absorb water so that the fibers in a paper towel absorb water.

Moss is essential in a terrarium. It provides for the conditions that other plants need to survive

It is the base provider helping to create water retention, keeping the soils used within the terrarium moist for plant survival. The Terrarium moss inside your terrarium can help to create a healthy ecosystem. It adds a base texture with a natural outdoor ground cover look. When moss is placed in a terrarium, it dies, releasing much-needed water and acidity into its environment in the decomposition process.

For fern moss to grow, it needs a lot of water and can live in water slightly submerged. It prefers shaded boggy areas but can grow in direct sunlight if provided with the necessary water. Moss is versatile and durable and can grow between cracks in sidewalks, on rocks and tree trunks, waterfall spray areas, and beside streams.

Terrarium Moss is the perfect bed ground cover. It provides coverage that looks like a beautiful plush green rug in the great outdoors. Its versatility and significance in the ecosystem help maintain the survival of much plant life.
