Walking Fern 5 For $16.99 Description

Walking Fern

The Walking Fern, or Asplenium rhizophyllum, as it is called botanically, is a rare type of Fern native to North America.

The Walking Fern is a small, distinctive fern that grows on moist and well-shaded limestone rocks, just as it does in the wild of the Appalachian Mountains. Walking Fern has long, narrow, triangular fronds that are evergreen year-round. The name of this Fern is derived from the way the Fern reproduces itself. Walking Fern has spore-producing structures found on the underside of each leaf. The tip of the frond can grows long, forming a “runner.” When the tip of the Walking Fern the runner touches a suitable spot, a new plant will take root.

Young Walking Fern plants tend to hug the surface of what they cling to, while older plants gain some height and take on an arching form. When dozens of Walking Fern plants grow in the same place, this results in a “vegetative colony,” which can appear as a thick stringy mat of greenery.

Walking fern care and maintenance

Walking Ferns thrive in moist, shady outdoor areas, so planting them in your water or rain garden is ideal. Yet most people cultivate Walking Fern in containers that can be moved indoors if needed. Plant your walking Fern in a shady area that receives indirect sunlight, in rich, moist soil where the Fern has plenty of room to spread its roots. You can amend the soil with an organic potting mix that contains peat moss if needed. Watering helps to keep your ferns green, lush and full, yet if planted in the right outdoor conditions, rainfall and soil moisture should make your walking fern thrive.

Considerations

Plant your Walking Fern in your garden where there is little activity since touching the fronds can cause damage. If planting as a colony, ensure that you space the ferns out at least 3 to 5 feet apart to give them adequate room to spread while not crowding each other out. You can plant walking Fern as a decorative touch in bald areas of your water or rain garden landscape or add a fresh green look among other ferns and flowers.

Walking Fern is available at TN Nursery at low prices and with fast shipping.
