Wax Leaf Privet Description

Wax Leaf Privet

Wax Leaf Privet or Ligustrum Ovaliflium, as it is known botanically, is a shrub with waxy, green, turned-up leaves and white flowers.

This shrub blooms in June and July and is very attractive to butterflies. Wax Leaf Privet originated in Japan and South Korea. This shrub is a fast-growing and flowering shrub and is a member of the olive tree family. As a prominent shrub in your garden landscape, Wax Leaf Privet will add texture and greenery all year long. Growing your Wax Leaf Privet as a hedge will give a beautiful and lively appearance to your garden. Wax Leaf Privet is a less expensive alternative to traditional hedges and requires little care once established.

Care and Maintenance

Wax Leaf Privet will grow from10 to 15 feet high and wide. These plants enjoy fertile sandy loam soil and soil with consistent moisture that is well drained for maximum growth. Regular watering is crucial to provide maximum growth. Ensure that you plant your Wax Leaf Privet hedge away from other trees so it is not blocked from the sun since it also requires full sun. Once established, you will only need to water your Wax Leaf Privet once a week with one inch of water.

Plant your Wax Leaf Privet in a row three feet apart from one another. As they grow, the plants will merge and create a thicker hedge-like appearance.

Pruning your Wax Leaf Privet hedges makes them grow thicker, so it is good to prune this hedge at least twice a year. Prune your Wax Leaf Privet hedges slightly thinner at the top and broader at the bottom to keep the hedge from growing too wide at the top while remaining narrow at the bottom to avoid losing leaves at its base.

Considerations

Wax Leaf Privet hedges are a perfect solution to bare landscape issues. This hedge will add a continuous green garden look making your garden sanctuary appear fresh and lively. Since many butterflies are attracted to the Wax Leaf Privet, ensure it is planted where you can enjoy privacy while watching butterflies all spring and summer.
