Weeping Willow Description

Weeping Willow Trees

The Weeping Willow, or Salix babylonica as it is known botanically, is the most popular of the weeping trees.

This tree bears graceful arching stems that dangle and sway in the breeze. A deciduous tree, the Weeping Willow shows leaves that are lance-shaped and grow 3 to 6-inches long. In autumn, this tree's leaves turn yellow before dropping. The Weeping Willow Tree's bark appears gray and rough, with deep, long ridges. When the Weeping Willow Tree blooms in late winter or spring, yellow catkins appear.

Care and Maintenance

Weeping Willows Trees are fast-growing and can realize 10 feet per year when young; however, their lifespan is a short 30 years. It is best to plant your Weeping Willow Tree in the fall to give the root system time to establish before the warmer weather begins. This tree thrives best in full sun or partial shade, with at least four hours of direct, unfiltered sunlight each day. The Weeping willow Tree is tolerant of a wide variety of well-draining soils, although it prefers moist, slightly acidic soil. This tree also grows well in alkaline, loamy, sandy, clay, or rich soils. Weeping Willows Trees thrive near standing water since they have a very long root system. Planting this tree in flood-prone areas of your garden landscape is ideal. Weeping Willow Trees have some drought tolerance and will grow the winter cold and summer heat as long as the water is provided. Mature Weeping Willow Trees do not require fertilizer if it is planted in rich soil, yet you can provide some fertilizer to create lush growth.

Considerations

Weeping Willow Trees tend to reach 50 feet in height and width, so they require a wide patch of lawn or yard to stretch their roots into. This tree works well in naturally moist areas, yet Weeping Willow Trees tend to shed their twigs and leaves, so avoid planting them where falling branches might cause problems. Their root systems are aggressive and will stretch wider than the tree is tall as it seeks out the nearest abundant water source. Do not plant near a septic system since the nutrients and oxygen in the soil attract the Weeping Willow Tree's roots.

A fantastic ornamental addition to your water garden landscape, the Weeping Willow Tree will give you years of viewing pleasure.
