Description

Wild Aster is also known as starworts or frost flowers, and they come in many shades of blue, white, purple, and pink

Aster plants thrive in full sun and well-drained soils. Most species are drought-tolerant and best left alone. Place them for showy bloom in front of other perennial wildflowers, against a shrub border, or at the base of a tall free-thrifting shrub for a close-up view of the foliage. Wild aster seeds can be sown indoors four weeks before the last frost or outdoors in early spring. Ripe seedheads attract bees and other beneficial insects.

With spring-like blooms from late summer to autumn, the Aster family includes more than 600 species. For those who grew up in warm, temperate regions and expected hot summers, the good news is that many asters are hardy plants that can withstand frost and temperatures of -10°F (-23.5°C). Many of them, too, blooms not only this summer but also each year in early summer and late summer. With their daisy-like flower heads ranging in color from white to blue to purple, they bring delightful beauty to the garden.

The Wild asters that grace your palette come from one species. Star Aster is native to North America and Europe, prevalent throughout the continent. It produces brilliant purple or white starry blooms all summer long.
