Bracken Fern 4 For $18.99 Description

Bracken Ferns

Bracken Fern, or Pteridium Aquilinum as it is known scientifically, is native to the moors of England.

However, several subspecies occur in the United States, including western or hairy broken, which grows in Wyoming, Colorado, Texas, Alaska, and Mexico, and Eastern Bracken, found in Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Minnesota. Bracken Fern is also famous in woodland gardens in the United States, and is a highly adaptable, extremely low-maintenance plant. Bracken Fern is also a wide-spreading plant growing as large as two to four feet long. Its leaves grow to bear a dark green or light green color. Moist wet soil suits the Bracken Fern; however, it thrives best in soil with higher acidity levels. Bracken Fern grows astonishingly fast and roots to the ground ten feet deep in the correct planting environment. The deeply grown seeds make Bracken Fern a vigorous plant that does not get damaged in high wind or storms.

Care and Maintenance

Bracken Fern bears a black rootstock that creeps into the soil to send up its fronds which may reach a height of 16 feet or more. While the fronds go dormant in the winter, the Bracken Fern provides excellent ground cover. In addition, Bracken Fern provides shade to other plants in your garden, so you can plant this fern near annuals that may need some shade during the afternoon when the sun is at its highest. Finally, since its leaves grow upward, the Bracken Fern will not overrun smaller plants. Bracken Fern leaves are oval-shaped, ending in a single-pointed blade, and develop several inches long, adding much grace to this plant. These plants are vascular plants with alternating generations, meaning they self-produce every other year.

Considerations

The Bracken Fern is low-maintenance with a terrific garden appeal when given the correct plating conditions. Small birds love to nest in Bracken Fern. Since this fern is a perennial, it will bear leaves all year, making it a perfect plant to enjoy bird-watching. Plant Bracken Fern against a border wall to shade smaller flowering plants that enjoy the shade. Your garden will be green all year.
