Ferns are Elegant, relaxing, and peaceful. These plants are the backbone of any low-maintenance garden. Everything in this collection has been chosen because it grows well on its own, crowds out quickly, and returns reliably year after year with little to no maintenance required. Ferns are prized not only for their delicate fronds and lush green color but also for their ability to fill in gaps where nothing else will grow.

Dryopteris marginalis, Athyrium filix-femina, Polystichum acrostichoides, and Osmunda cinnamomea are just a few of the hardy, dependable species that can be found here. Plant these beautiful Ferns in their appropriate growing zones and they will give you years of trouble free growth. Instead of wasting energy producing flowers and seedlings, ferns put all of their energy into forming lush colonies of foliage. The result is a full, grounded look with plants that have had years to establish in the wild.

Easy Care Ferns for Your Garden

When planted in conditions that mimic their natural woodland habitat, ferns are one of the easiest plants you can grow. Ferns in this collection generally like soil that stays evenly moist and well drained while sitting under partial to full shade. These qualities make ferns ideal for planting under trees, in shaded beds, and on the north side of your home. To plant, rake your soil until it's loose, then set your root system at ground level. Water well to encourage the roots to take hold. After your ferns have rooted in they really need nothing from you. Water them now and then if we happen to go through a drought but other than that they do not need supplemental feeding or pruning. The care they require is minimal compared to what they return. Ferns lay down roots and become established. You can divide many species to help rejuvenate the plant or spread the beauty to other areas of your garden.

Ferns for Shade Beds, Ground Cover and Volume

Wherever flowers and vines aren’t enough or won’t grow, Ferns can fill in the gaps. Their feathery foliage softens lines and borders making other shade-loving perennials feel like they actually belong in your garden. Gentle rustling as the breeze flows through also adds movement and life to shaded areas of your landscape. Ground coverage is another area ferns excel at. Once established they form thick masses of foliage that hold soil in place, look attractive year round, and help to choke out weeds. Mulching your plants will help the soil retain moisture and protect shallow roots. Garden Ferns work well planted alone, but can also be used combined with other plants to add volume and texture to beds.

Ferns for Your Yard or Garden

This fern collection has been curated to include plants that are known to do well for others in your climate zone. Proper plant selection is half the battle and will result in stronger plants, healthier fronds, and better return each year. During the first season after planting be sure to water your ferns regularly to allow the roots to get nice and cozy in their new home. Once established many ferns can survive on rain water alone and can even be divided every few years to encourage new growth or expand your fernery. Garden Ferns require very little maintenance and continue to look better with each passing season. Less work for you and more eye candy for everyone to enjoy.
