California Privet or Ligustrum Ovaliflium, as it is known botanically, is a shrub with shiny, green, turned-up leaves and white flowers.
This shrub blooms in June and July and is very attractive to butterflies. California Privet originated in Japan and South Korea. This shrub is a fast-growing and flowering shrub and is a member of the olive tree family. As a prominent shrub in your garden landscape, California Privet will add texture and greenery all year long. Growing your California Privet as a hedge will give a beautiful and lively appearance to your garden. California Privet is a less expensive alternative to traditional hedges and requires little care once established.
California Privet will grow from10 to 15 feet high and wide. These plants enjoy fertile sandy loam soil and soil with consistent moisture that is well drained for maximum growth. Regular watering is crucial to provide maximum growth. Ensure that you plant your California Privet hedge away from other trees so it is not blocked from the sun since it also requires full sun. Once established, you will only need to water your California Privet once a week with one inch of water. Plant your California Privet in a row three feet apart from one another. As they grow, the plants will merge and create a thicker hedge-like appearance.Pruning your California Privet hedges makes them grow thicker, so it is good to prune this hedge at least twice a year. Prune your California Privet hedges slightly thinner at the top and broader at the bottom to keep the hedge from growing too wide at the top while remaining narrow at the bottom to avoid losing leaves at its base.
California Privet hedges are a perfect solution to bare landscape issues. This hedge will add a continuous green garden look making your garden sanctuary appear fresh and lively. Since many butterflies are attracted to the California Privet, ensure it is planted where you can enjoy privacy while watching butterflies all spring and summer.
