Description

The New York Fern, or Thelypteris noveboracensis, is a perennial species of plant

It has fronds that taper at the top toward the base, creating a triangular shape. The fern grows along forest grounds in wet, boggy areas. Growing New York Fern in a garden is possible as long as the soil is rich, moist, and mulched.

The fern fronds are bright green in spring and more of golden color in the fall. The fern does not produce flowers or fruit. Remember that the New York Fern is a wandering plant, meaning it can grow into large colonies if not appropriately maintained.

The New York Fern will reach 24 inches tall and spread 15 inches at full maturity. When planting the fern, make sure you dig a 16 inches wide hole, 24 inches long, and approximately 1 ½ inch deep. To give the fern a good start, make sure you moisten the soil thoroughly. With proper care, the fern may flourish for roughly eight years.

The fern seems to do well in both sun and shade and looks best in woodland or naturalized gardens.

The fern often fills the gaps between flowers and offers shelter for various creatures, such as toads. The plant spreads through rhizome division. If the fern's growth becomes too aggressive, the best approach is to reduce and separate.

Multiplication of the New York Fern tends to be rapid thanks to the plant's shallow roots, which appear black and wiry. The fern can provide great gap coverage, particularly between spring ephemerals with careful planting, care, and overall maintenance.
