Persimmon Tree Growing Conditions

The Persimmon Tree doesn’t require a lot of work or special attention, once established. As a native tree, Diospyros virginiana will be hardy in most settings it finds itself in. When you plant yours, choose a location in your yard with well drained soil and room to grow. The tree will focus on creating a robust root system in the years following planting. Water regularly for the first growing season and then leave it be. They are drought tolerant once established and will do just fine with typical yearly rain fall. This is a tree that you can plant and then forget about; there is no need to hover over it to ensure great fruit. Growth is steady and does not rush to the sky like some trees. You will want to prune your tree every now and then to keep the shape how you like it. Overall maintenance of this tree is forgiving and is quite rewarding if you let it grow with little intervention.

Persimmon Tree Sunlight and Water Requirements

Sunlight and water needs are straightforward for them. Full sun is ideal for most orchard plants and this tree is no exception. Put it in a spot that gets lots of sun for most of the day. Too much shade will limit your fruit production significantly. As stated above, water regularly for the first year. After that you will only need to water during extreme drought conditions. They can grow wildly in the wild due to their ability to go longer stretches without water. Watering should never be a stress or cause for concern with your tree.

Persimmon Tree Maturity and Produce Yield

Expect yours to take a few years before it begins to produce regular yields of fruit. Like any tree, you have to allow the roots to establish themselves within the soil. Once established, it’s pretty much hands off for years to come. You can expect peak production from your tree when it begins to hit maturity around year 8-12. From there you could very likely have years where your tree seems to take care of itself, producing fruit every year.

Bonus info: Persimmon Tree Lifespan

The persimmon tree can live for a very long time. Trees have been known to live over 50 years when given the right conditions. Throughout its life you will witness your tree grow, bloom, produce fruit, and withstand the winters. During these dormant periods the tree will appear lifeless but rest assured it’s preparing for a comeback once the warm weather returns.
