American Wintergreen can be grown in USDA Zones 3 to 8. The soil must be dry and sandy in composition. The pH of the soil is not essential, and it can be anywhere between alkali or acidic pH levels. You should plant this specific plant in partial to medium shade from direct sunlight. It is essential that your soil drains well and is composed of enough sand to shed the moisture you give it. You can use this plant for landscaping as a ground cover. It can be planted densely to cover the soil beneath the dark green leaves. It is used in landscaping where the gardener does not want to use much water. Do not supplement your soil with organic matter or fertilizer. Just leave it as is. The plant doesn't want a lot of moisture-retaining matter or organic matter.
The American wintergreen plant is one to three inches tall. Spotted Wintergreen leaves are dark green with a leathery texture on top and pale green underneath them. There is one white stripe that runs through the leaf. The leaves are toothed.
The plant's stem is dark red, crimson from the stem blossoms a white flower that droops downward. There are three flowers on each stem, and on each flower, there are five petals. Each of the petals is a pale off-white. The stamens are yellow, and they droop down toward the ground. There are many stamens on each flower.
The plant requires very minimal care. It only needs half a cup of water every nine days. Other than that, the soil should be dry and sandy.
