Trees are an anchor of any landscape because they add structure, shade, and beauty that gets better each year. This collection has been curated to highlight varieties that are dependable growers, naturally beautiful, and a great investment for your landscape, requiring minimal care once established. Trees like Acer rubrum, Quercus alba, Magnolia grandiflora, and Cercis canadensis are all relatively easy to grow when planted in their ideal growing zones.

After a tree becomes established, it can be one of the lowest maintenance plants in your landscape. As they mature, their roots deepen which helps anchor soil and manage water while creating valuable shade. Trees can make your landscape feel more permanent and many can thrive for decades with just a little care after they’re established. Plant them wisely and with some care in the early years—allowing them to fill out into majestic specimens requires little effort on your part.

Trees That Require Little Care Once Established

Planting a tree is often the start of a long relationship and some trees are just easier to grow than others. Once you give your tree a good start by planting a healthy tree at the right depth in a place with room to grow, it will often take care of the rest.

Species like Betula nigra, Liquidambar styraciflua, and Nyssa sylvatica grow well in a wide range of growing zones. As long as they have well-draining soil, they will also adapt to different soil conditions with very little care on your part. Trees do require some water during their first year to establish their root systems, but most trees only need minimal care once these roots have grown past the original soil ball. The deeper a tree’s roots grow, the less of a nuisance our changing weather becomes. When you plant a tree that matches your growing zone and leave it be, you allow nature to take its course with little effort.

Trees Can Improve Your Landscape’s Beauty and Ecology

When you plant a tree, you’re doing more than filling in a space in your yard. Trees like Liriodendron tulipifera, Cornus florida, and Ginkgo biloba help cool your landscape, soften harsh lines often created by buildings and sidewalks, and add four seasons of interest from the excitement of bud break in the spring to glowing fall color. Evergreens help fill your yard with green all year long. They also help balance your landscape by functioning as wind buffers or tree sculpture to draw the eye through your landscape.

Mulching is one of the best ways to care for any type of plant. They retain moisture so your tree doesn’t need to be watered as often, it protects roots and improves your soil as it breaks down. Eventually, a tree’s root system will expand far beyond the area of mulch you’ve applied. Well-established trees can survive on Mother Nature’s watering schedule and require less attention from you. Tree care doesn’t have to be challenging to create incredible beauty.

Grow Trees Perfect for Your Climate, and That Will Stand the Test of Time

All trees have an ideal range of zones that they will grow best in, this collection focuses on trees that have been selected to perform well for you in your climate. Trees like Acer saccharum, Quercus rubra, and Taxodium distichum are all long-lived options that can adapt to site conditions while maintaining an attractive shape and size.

Planting them only requires some care while they get established, but after that, most of our native plants will not need trimming unless you desire a certain look. Not only do trees become larger and more impressive with age, but they’ll also continue growing for many years to come. They are a lasting addition to your landscape as long as you choose the species that can survive your winters and hot summers. Some trees can even be used as patio trees, making them perfect for providing shade wherever you live. Plant the right tree for your climate and lifestyle and enjoy it for years to come.
